Read this passage carefully then do the activities:
Obi, a young civil servant, has just been sentenced to a long term imprisonment for bribe-taking. He remembers and tells how it all started.
It all started during that season of scholarship…When a new model Chevrolet pulled outside his flat. He saw it from his desk. “Who could it be?” A business man certainly. “Whom could he want?” he wondered. At that moment a great man knocked at Obi’s door, and Obi jumped to open it for him. He probably wanted to ask him for the way to somewhere else.
“Good afternoon,” Obi said. “Good afternoon, are you Mr Okonkwo?” Obi said yes. The man came in and introduced himself. He was wearing a very expensive agbala suit. He brought out a little towel and an envelope full of money. “My son is going to England in September. I want him to get a scholarship to pay for his studies. If you can do it for me, here are fifty pounds.”
Obi told him that it was not possible. In the first place I don’t give scholarships, all I can do is go through the applications and recommend those who satisfy the requirements of the Scholarship Board. “Yes, just recommend him,” the great man said.
“Why don’t you pay for his studies? You have money. The scholarship is for poor people.”
The man laughed and said: “No man has enough money in the world.” He placed a wad full of money on the table before Obi. “This is just a small kola (= coffee), we will soon make good friends,” he said. After this, many other people bribed Obi who got accustomed to bribe-taking. But one day the police came to Obi’s house and arrested him…..
