Racial violence in America is rising at an alarming rate. Last month, a black youth was
shot to death in New York City after he and his friends were assaulted by a group of
whites. This event and others similar led our reporter to ask blacks their views on racism.
Sixty percent of the blacks interviewed still find racism affects their daily lives, and
seventy nine per cent believe racial attacks can happen in their towns or cities. Some of
them said it would be dangerous for them as blacks to go into some sections of the town.
Even wealthy blacks revealed that their successes hadn’t protected them from racist
attacks. Having money was no guarantee of equal treatment since they encounter racism
on their business and private lives more often than poorer blacks do.
Most of the blacks interviewed are dissatisfied with the Media. There are a lot of illiterate
people, black and white, but the media makes it sound as if all black people were ignorant.
“Three of four said they’d read, seen or heard biased reports about blacks in publications
on Radio or Television.
Racism is also present when you are looking for a job. “Indirectly, I’ve experienced
prejudice in terms of employment, “said Derrick Summers, a part-time college teacher from
Philadelphia. Despite a Master’s degree and experience, he couldn’t find a full-time
teaching job at a half-dozen colleges. He’s now teaching at the community colleges.
“Some people still are not accustomed to seeing a young black man with the qualifications
I have. Prejudice is all I can see. I would like to think people could be judged on their
ability, not just their colour”
Children are no exception. From a very young age, they are brought up with the idea that
white is good and black is bad”
By understanding each other, the black and the white communities will be able to live
together more peacefully and solve the problem of Racism. “Mutual understanding is the
best hope for eventually destroying the misunderstanding and prejudice resulting from
ignorance and fear,” said Christopher Edley, a law professor at Harvard. “But there is no
doubt that the blacks who are the pioneers in the white world usually experience a hard
time.”
