CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT SECOND YEAR BAC SCIENCES – 1
ST TERM -
Those who never doubt the importance of advertising are those who want to sell their goods and services. And they are countless. Each product in a supermarket is well defended on TV and in the press. No airline can fly without the conviction that it is on ads that its future relies. So
they invest a lot of money on commercials. Even whole countries present themselves in so many ways as the best places for holiday-makers. Advertising has helped mass markets to attract more clients, changed shopping habits, and created many jobs.
Advertising absorbs millions of dollars each day. So, many people see that if companies stopped advertising, prices would be lower. « After all, it’s the consumer who pays » They say. The idea is not as simple as that. Advertising can be offensive by using pictures or slogans that harm our culture. Everybody knows that most of what is said, written, or shown are lies. With their magic technique and products, advertisers try to convince us that our life can be better if we follow what
they present. Nonsense, of course!
But we must not forget that advertising can make a positive contribution to our pockets. Without it, many friendly newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations neither could nor survive. The fact that we pay very little for our daily newspapers and for our TV programmes is because of the money they get from advertisers. Just think how much a newspaper or a TV series would cost if we had to pay their full prices.
