| READING COMPREHENSION+ LANGUAGE+ WRITING SAMPLE 10 COMPUTERS TODAY While the basic idea behind a computer goes back to Charles Babbage's 19th century plan for an Analytical Engine, the first real computers were developed during the 1940s. Computers have evolved at an incredible pace since those early years, becoming consistently smaller, faster, more efficient, more reliable, and less expensive. At the same time, people have devised all kinds of interesting and useful ways to put computers to work to solve problems. Computers today, like their ancestors, are information processing machines designed to transform information from one form to another. When a computer operates, the hardware accepts input data from some outside source, transforms the data by following instructions called software, and produces output that can be read by a human or by another machine. Computers today come in all shapes and sizes, with specific types being well suited for particular jobs. Mainframe computers and supercomputers provide more power and speed than smaller desktop machines, but they are expensive to purchase and operate. Timesharing makes it possible for many users to work simultaneously at terminals connected to these large computers. At the other end of the spectrum, personal computers, ranging from standard desktop models to tiny-held machines, provide affordable computing for those of us who don't need the power of a mainframe. As PCs become more powerful and mainframes become smaller, the workstations and minicomputers that fall between them are being squeezed from both sides. Microprocessors aren't just used in general-purpose computers; they're embedded in appliances, automobiles, and a rapidly growing list of other products. Computer technology has changed the world rapidly and irreversibly. It's easy to list dozens of ways that computers make our live easier and more productive. At the same time, computers threaten our privacy, our security, and perhaps our way of life.
